Day four: Lemur survey and night hike

8 oktober 2023 - Andoany, Madagaskar

Today we went to Ampang to do a lemur survey. It was really fun and nice. It's nice to do some real research, especially in this beautiful nature! We named our lemur Chabert (after a bird). After a while we went back to camp for lunch. Then we had to get ready for our night hike, as we were going to leave at 14u.

For the hike we were going up around 700m to a church. The way there was, of course, pretty difficult and challenging, but also very beautiful. For the first part we were walking very fast, which made it even more challenging. But after the first break we went more mora mora. It was a beautiful hike, but extremely hot, sweaty and difficult paths again. We already saw some really cool animals and plants along the way! And I got to practice my reptile knowledge, which is going well, so that's fun :)

When we got to the church where we were staying the night, we were in for a treat to look forward to. There were sooo many cockroaches.

Then me and a couple others went to put our transect up for the night. We saw some Zebu's when doing this. After that we were going on a hike to the top. It was amazing view where we got to watch the sunset! Then we walked back and stopped on the way to eat some dinner. Dinner was very nice, they really made some great food for us. Also a papaya salad that looked kind of like atjar tjampoor. Very strange, would never have guessed it was papaya, but it was great!

On the way back we saw so many reptiles again, a lot of chameleons. When we arrived back at the church we dropped our stuff and started the transect. So many amazing animals. Some panther chameleons, a lot of Calumma, some geckos, some snakes and even a tree boa!!! That was so amazing and impressive. Besides the reptiles, we also saw a fancy yellow slug, some very cool spiders, a lot of crickets and even a praying mantis.

I really loved the hike and I like that we are really doing research. After the transect we sat outside for a while. This is when we found out that the seemingly abandoned place in front of the church, was in fact not abandoned. We found this out by seeing the face of a man in the open window. But he kept standing there staring for MINUTES and even smiling creepily. So that was great hahahaha. After some time we went to bed (which we were all dreading). There were quite some snoring people. Fair to say is that I didn't really sleep, but that's fine haha, part of the game.
