Day nine: sweaty hikes and tests

10 oktober 2023 - Antsiranana, Madagaskar

Today started early again, with some ghost stories at breakfast. Apparently the two coordinators Es and Cl both have a ghost here. Es has a little boy ghost that sleeps in her bed and just generally stares at her. Cl has a man that follows her.

So after an entertaining breakfast, I got ready for the day, as we had to hike to the agroforest again. The hike was extremely hot, sweaty and humid again, rough hikes. You don't know real sweating until you go on the forest hikes, honestly. Once at the agroforest some of us had to make signs and some plant trees again, and (which I really wanted) me, Ma and Sa got to measure plants and document it with Émile. It was pretty chaotic&unorganised, but I tried to improve it the best I could. During the measuring, I saw a beautiful orange panther chameleon, very actively dancing up a tree. Amazing! After the measuring, which took quite a long time, we walked back down to be in time for lunch. On the walk back, we collected some trash for the eco bricks.

After lunch it was time for our birds test, which I passed. It was quite a long test, and the second group that took it just conversed with each other etc., but the little group I was in taking the test, we made it :) After that we had a small break, before doing a biodiversity trivia. Which, as the name suggests, was a trivia about the biodiversity of Madagascar. The winners got a surprise from the Tuk Tuk shop, which sadly wasn't us (the winners had Fedy in their group sooo)

That basically concluded our program for the day, so Ma, No, Sa and I decided to go to the water. I went snorkeling, which was reaally nice! The water was good and calm all day and the visibility was great! I saw a very big turtle (BIG) and when I followed him, saw a cute small turtle. This one was still quite clumsy and was casually eating. I floated around him for a bit, and there were so many different fish around me! I snorkeled around a bit more, seeing so many different fish and corals. It was amazing. On the way back to shore, I ran into the big and small turtle again, together. It was so adorable!

When we went back up, it was almost time for dinner. This led to the usual: board with the program of tomorrow, the promise of a nice, busy, exciting day!! This time my cabin had cleaning duty, so we had to tidy up the eating area after everyone left. The night walk that was planned, was sadly cancelled. Because Émile has to walk all the way home after, and when it's late and going to rain really hard, he can't really do that. So a quite, calm night. I spent it having good, nice conversations with my roommates Sa and Ma. It was very nice and meaningful. Now to bed, to see another day

P.s. I'm using short letters to refer to other volunteers.
